Northern Tilth, in partnership with Dr. Linda Lee and Elijah Openiyi at Purdue University, is investigating the effect of biochar and high carbon ash on crop uptake of PFAS. Preliminary data indicates when biochar is mixed into soil that contains PFAS, the biochar stabilizes PFAS compounds and reduces crop uptake of PFAS while simultaneously improving soil health. Field trials in Maine and bench-scale trials at Purdue University will continue into 2025 and results will be presented to a national audience.
